Our Story

There is a particular quality of light along the Aegean coast — soft in the early morning, sharp and silver by midday, gold again as the sun drops toward the water. If you have stood in it, you know it. If you haven't, this is, in some small way, an attempt to bring it to you.

Olive & Pine began not as a business idea, but as a feeling I couldn't quite leave behind.

My Story

My name is Efruz. I was born and raised in Türkiye, and my summers belonged to the Aegean coast, where life moves at the pace of the tide.

I grew up snorkelling in water so clear you could count the stones beneath you. I collected shells along the shore and let the sun dry the salt on my skin before I ever reached for a towel — and when I did, it was always a Turkish towel, thin and soft, draped over a railing to dry in the breeze. I wandered through olive groves that had been there longer than anyone could remember, and I stayed outside until the light gave out, because there was rarely a reason to go in sooner.

None of this felt remarkable at the time. It was simply how days were spent.

It wasn't until I built a life in Canada that I understood how specific — how quietly rare — that upbringing had been. The towels, the unhurried rituals around water and rest: these weren't things I had thought to miss, because I hadn't realized they were mine to lose. Once I did, I wanted to bring a piece of them here, not as souvenirs, but as something people could actually use and live with.

That is what Olive & Pine is.

Why Olive & Pine Exists

This isn't a shop that sells towels and bath accessories so much as it is a small effort to share a way of living.

The Aegean way of life is built on things that don't announce themselves loudly: sitting a little longer at the table, drying off slowly instead of rushing to the next thing, choosing objects that are made to be used for years rather than replaced in a season. These aren't grand traditions. They're small, repeatable moments — and I've come to believe that small, repeatable moments are what a home is actually made of.

Whether it's wrapping yourself in a towel after a swim, taking a quiet bath at the end of a long day, or starting the morning with a simple skincare ritual, these moments deserve a little intention. That belief is the whole reason Olive & Pine exists.

Why Turkish Cotton

If you've never used a Turkish towel, the difference is hard to explain until you feel it.

Turkish cotton is grown with unusually long fibres, and that length matters more than people realize. Long fibres spin into stronger, finer thread, which is what gives these towels their particular softness — a softness that doesn't fade with use but actually deepens with every wash. They're lighter than a typical terry towel, yet they hold water remarkably well, and because the weave is looser and the fabric thinner, they dry in a fraction of the time. You can fold one into a bag without a second thought.

That combination — light, absorbent, quick-drying, and built to soften rather than wear out — is why Turkish towels have earned their reputation far beyond Türkiye's borders. They move easily between the beach, the bath, the sauna, the pool, a weekend away. They aren't seasonal purchases. Some of the towels I grew up with are still in use in my family's home today, years and years later, still doing their job.

A Tradition, Not Just a Product

The weaving techniques behind these towels weren't invented for export. They developed over generations, in workshops where the craft was passed from one set of hands to the next, refined slowly because there was no reason to rush something that already worked.

Every piece we carry is made in Türkiye, sourced with that history in mind rather than treated as an afterthought. Beyond the towels, our collection includes traditional bath gloves inspired by the hamam ritual — the kind used for centuries to gently prepare the skin before washing — and cotton tote bags meant for actual daily use, not just display.

None of these pieces are meant to sit unused. A bath glove earns its place in a weekly routine. A towel gets better the more it's washed and worn. The value isn't in owning them — it's in what they quietly become part of.

Our Inspiration

Everything about Olive & Pine traces back to a specific set of places and sensations: the turquoise of the Aegean Sea, olive trees that have stood for generations, the smell of pine carried on a summer breeze, whitewashed stone villages, the particular warmth of sun that only exists near salt water, long meals that stretch into evening, afternoons with nowhere else to be.

These aren't abstract ideas to us. They shape which products we choose to bring over, the colours we're drawn to, the way we photograph everything, the overall feeling we're trying to hold onto. If something doesn't fit that world, it doesn't make it into the shop.

Our Philosophy

We don't think of what we do as luxury in the way that word usually gets used. It isn't about having more. It's about choosing well — fewer things, made with more care, that hold up to actual daily life.

That means valuing craftsmanship over trend, and durability over convenience. It means believing that a good towel can be a small, steady source of calm in an otherwise full day. We'd rather make one thing worth keeping for a decade than ten things meant to be replaced within a year.

Olive & Pine isn't trying to sell you an idea of a different life. It's an invitation to bring a few honest, well-made things into the one you already have — and maybe, in doing so, to slow down just slightly more often.
